Something I have always needed in my writing was to be able to see what I wanted my character to look like. If I didn't I noticed I accidently kept changing things about thier appearance. About a year ago, I came across something called artbreeder that for the most part works really well when it comes to creating characters.
*Disclaimer artbreeder does not control the AI generated pictures.
The first thing I always do when creating a character is I'll go to splicer and use the portrait setting. Don't use the character one unless you want your picture looking like this:

It's not very nice looking is it? So go to the portrait setting. You can find all of this in the create section. On mine it is defualted as portrait but I would make sure just in case. Once you hit new and get to the part where we can actually do something, I want you to look above the picture and hit add parent. You can select anything you previously liked, anything you've previously created or anything public that someone else has created. Choose at least one picture you like but if you want artbreeder to mix two pictures you can add another parent.
Once you decided on your parents, fiddle around with the sliders until you're happy with what your character looks like. Here's an example of what my splicer looked like:

Now, if you're happy with it you can leave it like that but I find ususally this is a great start but its not exactly like my character yet. So my next step is to go back to create and choose poser. Hit the little picture with the plus and add your splicer. Remove the default picture and add in your prompt. For example it might be: A girl with a school uniform, smiling. Choose the number of pictures you want AI to generate (Beside the generate button), and hit generate. If it has generated something you like you have to it save for it to be kept in your profile! Do keep in mind that if it requires AI to generate something it'll cost you what you call credits.
We'll talk about credits later, but after you've tried out to first pose, you can switch it. Find the black picture with the lines and dots in it. Under it you'll find a picture with a plus to it, which is indentical to the one we used to put in your splicer. Click that and you'll see new options to what pose you can have your character do.
After you're happy with your characters, make sure you save them and exit using the home button on the top of your screen. If you still can't get your character hwo you want I suggest trying out prompter or composer. They work pretty much the same way and there is instructions if you hit the question mark on composer.
Now, back to credits. Credits are something you can earn by doing different tasks daily. If you vote, you'll get 1 credit for every voting milestone you hit; there is 3 of them. You get one credit for entering an image in a remix party. If you're lucky you can earn credits for doing well in a contest. For example, if you get voted in the top 50% in a contest you'll recieve one extra credit. Credits will expire in one month of you don't claim them right away.
That's the basics of artbreeder! I really recommend it's honestly great for writing. If you have any questions, let me know!
