Both Sides Of Character Traits

clarklydia578

Usually in stories, courage is a good trait, envy a bad one but what if they weren't?

I once saw a writing prompt that went along the lines of: The city you lived in had many superheros that were beloved by the people. Every single one of them had some sort of "mental dissablity" or "problem". Their differences were seen as a power. So how do you alter how your character's traits are seen, and what can they be altered to?

Different traits have a different "reputation". For instance, Perfectionism can be both seen as a good and bad trait like every other trait. On the good side the character would always fix something that needs fixing or will simply have the job done right the first time. On the bad side, They'll never be satisfied. Here's a quick list of traits seen in both good and bad ways.

  • Perfectionsim: Fixes things that need to be fixed; does the job right the first time. They won't be satisfied.

  • Honesty: Can create a trustworthy character, who's very open; great friend material. Can seem rude or insensitive at times.

  • Devotion/Loyalty: You know this person will always stay at your side or they will always chose a certain object over another. Can become an obbession or they can end up being loyal to the wrong person.

  • Dependable: Allows others to help and refuses to completely rely on theirselves. Can be a good thing if someone sets them on the right track rather than listening to what they believed which was wrong. However, it can leave a lack of improvement if they always need someone by their side.

  • Optimistic: Although, it can be a good thing they'll fail to be realistic and set goals that they'll be able to reach. Going back to the talk about mental issues being a power, depression is the oposite of this which allows someone to realistically be able to see multiple outcomes and work their way to a goal within their reach.

  • Protectiveness: They can potentially end up saving someone but at the same time, they coud be overprotective and refuse to let someone live their life and move on if they're stuck in one place being scared all the time.

  • Careful: They can be looking out for danger and help others avoid trouble but they'll miss out on good opprotunities if they won't risk anything.

  • Persausive: Can be useful when trying to help someone who's quite stubburn, however you might be coming off as manipulative.

  • Self love: Being able to love yourself is a trait not many have, give your characters this trait, keep in mind it could seem selfish at times.

If you have anymore to add don't be afraid to comment it below! I don't mind an email either. Have a great day writers!
