Plot Twists To Use And To Avoid In Your Writing

First Lets go over some overused plots we don't want to see:

  1. The "dead" family member or friend is actually alive (I have seen this so many times! Please mix it up.)

  2. The main character being the lost hero (It's so predictable.)

  3. The main character is the one who suppose to save them all.

  4. A common or average person gets crowned

  5. The hero actually winning (Changing this could ruin your readers. I would love to see what you would write down. Bonus points if you use this as a writing prompt and tell me down in the comments!)

  6. The villain is always leaving mistakes (The better they are at hiding and the closer they are to winnning the scarier they get)

  7. The villain not having any "life" besides fighting the hero (I love villians with character! Have them not show up every time because of an family emergency or show they have real friends.)

Plot twists to the boring plot twists

Here are some ideas to mix up the plot twists above if you're feeling you want these in your story still:

  1. The characters have mistaken the character for the person they thought were dead (Even better if they lost their memory and believe they are that "dead person".)

  2. The main character believes they're the lost princess or prince, convinces everyone else and then they realize the protangonist wasn't royal afterall.

  3. The protagonist's friend is the one who haves to save them in the end

  4. The common or average person's crown is taken from them

  5. Have the villain win a battle (even if it is small)

  6. The villain is so good that you have no reason to suspect them

  7. The villain is trying to protect his family and friends

Here are some alternative plot twists that would be amazing in a story:

  1. An unimportant item goes missing and they find out that it was important to them afterall

  2. The good character's moral belief's change quickly

  3. The villain changes their goal because of a realized mistake involed in their personal life

  4. The kidnapped good guy falls in love with the bad guy and everyone thinks they're under a curse or mind control

  5. The "hero" is so focused of completing a mission they turn into a bad guy and don't let anything get in the way of their goal

  6. The main character is told that what they are in search for doesn't exist

  7. The main charcter's closest friend turns out to be lying about their past
