Choosing Titles For Your Book

As a writer myself I have to admit that I am (or at least was) bad at coming up with titles. An easy soloution could have been use a generator for the book title and don't do chapter titles but as a reader myself I loved having the chapter titles and I wanted a book title that was unique. My favourite thing was before reading the story I would read the funny chapter titles in the table of contents. I always wanted to be able to write chapter titles that would make my readers laugh like so many other authors had done for me. After a while of trying to sort out what would work for me I came up with a couple strategies that I wanted to share.

I'm going to save the best for last by starting off with book titles. These were easier for me to think of but still I had some trouble to find something that worked. It drove me insane that I couldn't think of a title and I ended up not writing the story because I couldn't think of something. Honestly my best advice would be to stick short. Some books sound amazing with the long titles but I find that the shorter they are the more it makes you curious. The one worded titles are my favourite. Imagery and metaphors are great titles that make me interested so I would suggest those.

For great chapter titles what I recently found was to think over what you want to happen in your chapter. Once you have decided that list all the minor or small things that happen in your chapter. For instance, if your chapter is about a kid going to see an old relative and somewheres in the chapter he breaks their tea pot make the chapter title aabout the tea pot breaking. I would name my chapter something like "There goes the teapot" (no judgement allowed I'm thinking on the spot). The goal would be to ignore the going to see the relative plot and to mention the tea pot breaking.

I love that idea for the chapter titles! The readers will wonder what it means until they get to that part and it'll click, while still not giving away the plot if you go to the table of contents and read all the chapter titles.
